Social Studies Grading Policy
As part of our school culture, each area of study has two types of grades: formative and summative. Additionally, as part of our CMS culture we have certain policies about late assignments and student professionalism in their work. Below is a general overview of the grading policies for 8th grade Social Studies.
Formative: These grades are taken throughout the learning process and indicate the progress a student is making in learning specific concepts or skills. Examples of these would be classwork, homework, pop quizzes, and so on. Formative grades account for 60% of a student's final grade.
Summative: These grades are taken as a final snapshot of what a student has been learning over time. Examples of these would be exams, portfolios, projects and so on. Summative grades account for 40% of a student's final grade. Additionally, Unit Portfolio and Trimester Culminating assessments are integrated throughout all areas of study and so their grades are incorporated into the summative grades for all areas of study.
Late Policy: Work that is handed in late can, at most, receive half credit, unless there is a reasonable circumstance to why the assignment is late. This can be discussed upon submission of the assignment.
Additionally, as part of their formative assessments, student do daily bellwork assignments that are collected every Friday. Because students do this assignment on a daily basis as part of their morning routine, unfortunately, it is not possible to make up missed or late bellwork assignments. If students know that they will be absent on a Friday, they should hand in their assignment early in order to get as many points for that week as possible.
Absence policy: If students miss school, it is their responsibility to inquire about any missed assignments or classwork. They are expected to get any missed notes from their peers and are held accountable to the same due dates as their peers unless they request alternative arrangements due to their absence.
I hope that the information above helps to shine a light on how grading happens in Social Studies. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions . Jazakum Allahu Khairan
