Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatu Allahi Wa Barakatuhu,
In sha Allah this message reaches you in a state of high eman and health. Alhamdu lilah we have begun this blessed year on a great foot and hope to continue throughout the year. In this edition of our class bi-weekly newsletter, you can see a glimpse of what 8th grade has been working on, and what our plans are for the coming days and months.
In Language Arts, students will be looking at systems (family, community, globally) and will also thinking critically about their role in these systems. In addition, students will study systems of language, including revising and proofreading. In this manner, they will begin to recognize that language requires synergy between its components in order to generate meaning. Finally, students will read The Last Sermon and The Last Lecture, looking for key themes, and ideas, and deciding which of these ideas that they might want to implement in their lives.
This year in Islamic studies we will be beginning with the end. The last sermon, the last hour, and the last moment will be the highlight of our studies during this unit. Students will study the Seerah with a focus on the end of the Prophet's (pbuh) life. They will derive lessons from his farewell sermon, along with his final advice before his passing (pbuh). They will further study the fiqh of salatul janazah along with the Islamic burial. Throughout the year we will conduct an in-depth study of the occurrences and signs that will lead up to the last hour as described in the Quran and Sunnah. In the process of building our Iman, the students will work on preparing their hearts, souls, and actions for the hereafter.
In their study of Science, students will be looking at the weather. Weather phenomena capture our attention on a daily basis. The students will develop an understanding of the warming of the Earth by the sun as the major source of energy for phenomenon on Earth and how the sun’s warming relates to weather, climate, seasons, and the water cycle. After gaining an in depth understanding of the weather system, students will create their own weather station.
As part of their Mathematical Studies, our 8th graders started the year off trying to get a grasp of the intangible... the intangibly HUGE and intangibly small creations in this world by working with exponents and scientific notation. Students will continue working on these concepts throughout the unit Be ithn Allah.
And in Social Studies, students will be beginning their study of the history of our country. During unit 1, they will be examining the early colonial period of United States History as well as the initial nation building activities that settlers were engaged in. Students will think deeply about how it was the diverse groups that first settled the United States were able to come together and found a successful nation. Finally, students will work together to apply the lessons they learned to modern situations that can be seen around the world.
As you can see, we are doing our best to provide your child with the most comprehensive education possible. We are working hard to integrate what students learn and to weave cohesive units of instruction so that everything a student encounters in one class fits well with what he or she is hearing in other classes.
As a final note, I would like to recognize Mazen Zeidan for his community efforts. Mazen consistently holds the door for his peers during transitions to and from prayer. Additionally, Mazen always has something insightful to contribute in our class discussions. We are truly luck to have Mazen in our class and appreciate his presence in our class community. May Allah reward him and his family.
